What’s a Guard to Do
“You again!” The muscle-bound security guard who responded to Esther’s wave scowled at Klaia impatiently. “Look, lady, you gotta stop harassing the vendors or you’re gonna have to leave. Uh, what’s with those guys?”
The wizards kneeling across from Audrey’s table began to chant even louder. They swayed together as a strange light glowed from beneath their robes. The crowd murmured and more cell phones appeared.
“We do not have time for this!” Klaia insisted with vehemence.
“We’re just here to sell toys and stuff,” Esther told her, picking up a fairy doll and shaking it toward Klaia. “If you aren’t here to buy—”
Klaia waved her arm in a complex pattern.
There was a sizzle in the air behind her.
A jagged bolt of light hovered in the empty space, and then pulled itself in two, creating a swirling abyss that shimmered and cracked with sparks of blue light.
Screams echoed through Artists Alley. People ran in all directions. The immediate crowd tried to get away, while newcomers pressed in to see what was happening. A few intrepid bystanders kept their cell phones trained on the action, pivoting between the strange vortex and the chanting wizards.
“I’ll take the Star Stone through this rift to my own time,” Klaia pledged, urgently thrusting her upturned palm toward Audrey.
“B-but it’s j-just a necklace,” Audrey stammered, the glowing rift drew her eyes from Klaia’s pleading face. “I thought it was pretty… the jeweler said it was magical, but I didn’t think…”
Audrey trailed off as Esther stepped close, edging a shoulder slightly in front of her friend. She shouted at the security guard angrily.
“Aren’t you going to do something?”
“I… uh…” The guard glanced rapidly from Esther to Klaia, from Klaia to the wizards, and from the wizards to the gaping rift.
“Man, this is above my pay grade!”
At once, the wizards dropped their arms and stared directly toward Esther and Audrey. Their eyes glowed with the same deep red light that was now pouring from their robes. Esther swallowed hard and turned her head slightly toward Audrey.
Her voice was eerily calm as she said, “I think we should run.”
