A Tiny Terror
“Run where?” Audrey shrieked.
The crowd had grown more chaotic, and they were trapped behind Audrey’s table, which was stuck in a back corner of the room. There was a trio of glowing, chanting wizards kneeling on their right and Klaia’s gaping, sparking rift swirling on their left.
Esther’s sudden scream shattered the last of Audrey’s reserve. Her heart leaped to her throat as she spun toward her terrified friend.
“What?”
“Th- the…”
Esther gasped for words, staring at the crocheted fairy doll still gripped in her fist.
The doll was scowling back and pressing against Esther’s fingers with her tiny crocheted hands.
“Will you stop shaking me!” she snapped in a tiny voice.
With that, the fairy doll bit Esther’s trembling hand, using the shock of the moment to break free. She leaped toward Audrey, who instinctively covered her face.
Within seconds, the fairy doll had snatched Audrey’s pendant, swung herself onto the table, and bounced into the arms of the waiting wizards.
“No!” Klaia wailed, knocking into Audrey’s table as she rushed the trio.
“You’re too late!”
The central wizard held the necklace over his head, callously dropping the fairy doll to the ground with a soft thunk. The wizards raised their arms. Black clouds swirled, coalescing into a horned demon with blood-red eyes and needle-like teeth.
“All hail Vryslik, Claimer of Worlds!”
Audrey grasped Esther’s arm.
The few teens who had stayed dove under neighboring tables, their cell phones still recording.
Vryslik surveyed their terror with a sneer before his booming voice rang out.
“I claim this world as my own!”
The room fell silent.
The wizards bowed to Vryslik, and Klaia dropped her head in defeat. Her polearm clattered to the ground.
“Um, excuse me,” Esther spoke into the silence. “What does that mean?”
All eyes turned to her. Audrey blinked, Klaia gawked, and the wizards scowled.
“What does it mean for Vryslik to claim our world?” She clarified. “Are we, like, enslaved now?”
Vryslik was visibly offended by her questions.
The lead wizard hurried to answer for him.
“Vrsylik does not have the time or interest to enslave your puny little race. He has claimed your world. That is all that matters.”
“So…?” Audrey chimed in. “He claimed our world and will now leave? And we’ll go on, same as always?”
Vryslik huffed in annoyance. Again, the scowling lead wizard spoke for him.
“Yes, but now Vryslik has claimed your world!”
He put everything he had into those words.
“Okay,” Esther agreed, doing her best not to visibly shrug. “I guess, we’ve been claimed then.”
“Yes, you have,” the wizard responded curtly. “And don’t you forget it!”
With that, the wizards and Vryslik faded into a cloud of black smoke and promptly disappeared.
Klaia shook her head sadly. She had picked up the fairy doll, who patted Klaia’s shoulder consolingly before shooting Esther a disapproving scowl.
“I have failed,” Klaia told Audrey and Esther gravely. “For all time, you will now be included on Vryslik’s list of claimed worlds.”
“Uh, that’s okay,” Audrey told her soothingly. “You did your best.”
“We’ll survive the shame, Esther added. “Somehow.”
The End
Nice work. Your choices have led to our world being claimed by Vryslik for all time—whatever that means.
