Heroes
“Take it!” Audrey shouted, trembling as she unclasped the necklace and thrust it into Klaia’s waiting hand.
Before Klaia could take a step, thick vines snaked up her legs and wrapped around her waist. The wizards rose from their kneeling positions, gliding toward the spot where Klaia was held fast.
“Let her go!” Esther shouted, pelting the wizards with crocheted dragons and fairy dolls.
The wizards paused, flinching as Audrey joined Esther, hurling whatever objects they could reach.
“I wish I’d brought my knitting needles,” Audrey muttered darkly, and Klaia struggled to break free.
The security guard had crouched low, telling himself this wasn’t really happening.
“Just a dream,” he mumbled under his breath.
But he knew it wasn’t a dream, and he knew he had to do something. Especially after he saw Esther and Audrey bravely going after the wizards with nothing more than stuffed toys for weapons.
As the wizards closed in, dodging the barrage of stuffed crafts, the guard edged his way around Klaia’s immobilized form. With a tight nod and a prayer of hope, he flexed his strong legs and pounced.
“Aiiiyeeee!”
The guard bellowed, knocking the wizards down like dominos and pinning them to the ground under the weight of his own muscular body.
“Run!” he yelled to Klaia, seeing that the vines had instantly released her.
She nodded her thanks, pivoted, and leaped into the rift. The moment she did, the robes beneath him softened, flattening into the floor.
“Where did they go?” Audrey asked, watching the guard poke at the empty pile of fabric.
“Who cares?” Esther countered. “As long as they aren’t here, I’m happy!”
“Yeah, but…”
“You’re a hero!” Esther praised the guard with a huge grin of relief.
“Am I?”
The guard seemed dazed as he sat upright, taking in the wreckage around them.
Most of the crowd had fled, but two teenagers had lingered, hiding under a table and recording everything on their phones.
“Get out of here!” the guard shouted. They startled and scurried away, but turned back from a safer distance.
A moment later, the air sizzled and cracked as Klaia returned through the rift. She surveyed the scene, noting the wizards’ empty robes flattened beneath the guard.
“The Star Stone is safe,” she announced. “Is everyone unharmed?”
Audrey and Esther looked at each other, then scanned the devastation to the space around them. They gestured toward the toppled tables and trampled artwork.
“Uh…”
“Oh, you needn’t worry about this,” Klaia smiled softly. “When I close the rift, your timeline will reset to before this damage occurred.”
“How far back?” Esther laughed, “Because there are a few things I’d like to…”
“You mean, none of this will have happened?” the guard cut in with a frown.
“Sorry,” Klaia shrugged. “But you have all helped to save your world. That is what matters.”
“Uh, yeah,” the guard relented. “I guess.”
Audrey and Esther dropped to the ground beside the guard, overwhelmed and exhausted by the whole ordeal.
“Hooray for us,” Audrey managed weakly.
“Yeah,” the guard chuckled. “Go, team!”
“You saved us,” Esther told the guard. “And we don’t even know your name.”
“Ah,” the guard flushed lightly. “It’s…”
But Klaia closed the rift before he could tell them.
