The Star Stone
After a busy morning filled with happy shoppers and colorful characters, Audrey was pleased with her early success. Her fairy dolls and dragons continued to draw a lot of attention. She’d sold several sets of dragon-scale gloves, a few dragon-tail hats, and many crocheted flower pins or flower crowns.
Although Geekify Greenville was a small event by con standards, it drew a fairly large crowd. Which was great for a local artisan like Audrey.
From behind her table, Audrey scanned the con floor, smiling when she spotted anyone wearing her craft pieces. She absently fished her pendant from where it had fallen inside her neckline, smiling because the jeweler who’d sold it to her had promised it would bring good luck.
“How much for the little girl?”
Audrey turned toward the raspy voice to see Esther waving around a fairy doll and trying to suppress her devilish laughter.
“Oh, haha,” Audrey rescued the doll and straightened her tousled curls, then turned to some women who were sifting through a basket of mystical flower pins.
Esther came around the backside of the table and plopped into a chair. She wore a black Alice in Wonderland tank top and had her orange volunteer shirt draped over one shoulder. Her feet were sore, and her face hurt from smiling at so many strangers.
“Oh, great,” she groaned, catching sight of Klaia cutting through the crowd. “I have a bad feeling about this.”
“What?” Audrey finished up her sale, then saw the wizards approaching from the opposite side of the room.
“Oh,” she shrugged, hoping they might buy some of her dragon designs.
Neither of them was prepared for Klaia to dash into the wizards’ gliding path, brandishing a polearm.
“Stand back!” she shouted, drawing curious stares.
The trio of wizards regarded her coolly.
“You are too late,” the central wizard sneered. “We have located the Star Stone.”
“You don’t have it yet,” Klaia taunted. “And I am sworn to protect it with my life!”
“You are no match for our combined power!” the wizard responded disdainfully.
“Quick!” Klaia reached toward Audrey, keeping one eye on the wizards. “Give me the Star Stone!”
All eyes turned to Audrey.
“Uh…” she froze, unsure whether to laugh or play along.
“Your necklace!” Klaia urged.
Esther leaned back in her chair, eyeing the bystanders who had pulled out their phones to record the unfolding scene. Audrey shook her head and held up her pendant.
“This necklace?”
The wizards dropped to their knees, arms in the air. Klaia held out her open palm more insistently.
“Give it to me now!” she demanded. “Before they confound us with their magic!”
