Vryslik, Claimer of Worlds
“I’m not giving you my necklace,” Audrey laughed shakily, wrapping her hand around her pendant and feeling the stares of those watching this strange scene play out.
“You would doom your own world?” Klaia pressed. “There’s no time for this. The wizards’ magic is too strong. If you don’t—”
“Okay, that’s it!” Esther stood up, lightly nudging Audrey away from Klaia. “You’ve had your fun, but my friend is not giving you her jewelry. So, move it along.”
Klaia stared at Esther in shock. The arm she held toward the wizards wavered, dropping slightly. In an instant, a blinding light flashed through the convention hall.
Vines rose from the ground, rooting Klaia to her spot. Those who had stopped to watch now scrambled to get away. Wine-red smoke gathered around the wizards.
Esther watched, helpless, as Audrey’s pendant hovered in mid-air, straining against her neck until the chain snapped and the polished stone flew into the outstretched hand of the central wizard.
“The Star Stone is ours!” the wizards chanted in unison. “Come to us, Vryslik! Claim this world for your own!”
A dark shadow emerged, towering above the wreckage of the surrounding tables. It formed into the gruesome visage of a horned demon with blood-red eyes and needle-like teeth.
Esther wished for a miracle. Audrey wished they’d stuck to craft fairs.
