Klaia’s Sworn Duty
“You’ll give it back, right?” Audrey whispered, fumbling for the clasp of her necklace.
“What are you doing?!” Esther jumped up, grasping her friend’s arm. “Don’t give this stranger your necklace!”
Audrey shrugged free with a soft laugh.
“It’s just for show, she’s not going to actually take it.”
Klaia frowned at them both, warding the wizards with one outstretched arm.
“We do not have time for this,” she hissed. “I need to return the Star Stone to the protection of my tribe. For all of our sakes.”
The wizards murmured an indistinct chant.
Audrey glanced at the curious bystanders, some who had their cell phones trained on the scene unfolding around her table. Esther crossed her arms and scowled. Audrey hesitated, imagining the videos of her simply handing her jewelry to a thief.
“Look, I’m all for having fun here, but I’m not actually giving you my necklace,” Audrey apologized.
“It is not your necklace,” Klaia insisted. “It is the Star Stone, a powerful gem that was lost through a time rift long ago. Vryslik has sent his wizards to scour the universe for it, just as my tribe has sought to protect it.”
“Okay, we need some security over here,” Esther decided, scanning the crowd for a hotel security guard or Geekify Greenville volunteer.
The wizards’ chanting grew louder, rising above the din of the milling crowd.
“We do not have time for this!” Klaia repeated more urgently. “This is strange to you, but you must trust that I am telling you the truth! Give me the Star Stone now, before the wizards’ magic takes hold!”
