Worlds Collide
Though tired from volunteering, Esther enjoyed selling crafts while Audrey spent the afternoon crocheting more flowers. She had nearly convinced twin brothers to buy matching dragon-tail hats when the overhead lights flickered again.
Audrey looked up from her project and saw Klaia approaching with a golden orb in her left hand.
“Where is the Star Stone?” Klaia demanded. “My scrying stone tells me it is near.”
“First the Star Stone, now a scrying stone?” Esther laughed. “Maybe you should be at a geology fair.”
“You are not amusing,” Klaia informed Esther curtly. “Show me your jewelry.”
Audrey felt the weight of the pendant around her neck. It had fallen below her neckline, as usual, and she had no intention of showing it to Klaia.
At that moment, Ashlee stormed the table angrily.
“A Trataqi hunter!” she exclaimed. “What are you doing here? Your tribe must notify SETLOE of interdimensional travel. It’s in the treaty.”
“The Trataqi recognize no treaty with this world.”
Klaia sneered, but Ashlee softened.
“Oh, dear, what era are you from?” She shook her head, turning toward Audrey and Esther to explain, “time-traveling aliens are so tricky.”
“Aliens?” Audrey and Esther echoed in surprise.
“Yes,” Ashlee confirmed. “The Trataqi rarely come to Earth, but that would explain the power fluctuations.”
“You are wasting my time,” Klaia decided. “I must secure the Star Stone before the Order of Vryslik appears.”
Ashlee stepped closer, showing no fear.
“Your mission doesn’t concern me,” she insisted. “As a SETLOE field agent, I am telling you to leave our world until you have filed the proper forms.”
Klaia fumed, then waved her right arm, splitting the air behind her with a crackling flash of blue light. The resulting rift sparked dangerously, sending most people screaming for safety. Audrey and Esther stood transfixed.
“Maybe I should send you away?” Klaia threatened.
Ashlee held her ground, but fear had crept in.
“Wait!” Audrey fished the pendant from under her shirt and held it out toward Klaia. “I have jewelry!”
“The Star Stone!” Klaia stared at the crystal hanging from Audrey’s necklace. “Give it to me quickly!”
As Audrey fumbled with the clasp, the trio of wizards appeared. Their eyes glowed red, and they floated closer by the second. In a rush of fear, Esther snapped Audrey’s chain, thrusting the pendant into Klaia’s waiting palm.
Without a word, Klaia jumped through the rift and the wizards swiftly followed. The rift closed behind them, and the room fell silent. Audrey and Esther surveyed the mess of overturned shelves and trampled art. Some teens huddled under a table, recording with their phones.
“Well,” Ashlee smiled, briskly turning back to Audrey’s table. “That’s that. Do you have a flower crown that would match my sweater?”
