While the World Sleeps
Audrey and Esther had crossed the lobby and were about to pass the ropes into the main con floor when a man with a clipboard and walkie-talkie hurried up to them. He wore an orange Geekify Greenville volunteer shirt, paired with khaki shorts and well-worn sneakers.
“Hey, I’m Steve, the volunteer coordinator.”
“Yeah, we’ve met,” Esther reminded him before giving her name and introducing Audrey.
“Right, right, yeah,” Steve nodded rapidly. “I remember you. I just never expect anyone to remember me. Anyway… Do you know that woman?”
He nodded in Ashlee’s direction.
“No,” Audrey shook her head. “I mean, we just met her.”
“Well, I’ve been getting some complaints about her. About odd behavior.”
“About her alien conspiracy theory?” Esther laughed.
“Uh, yeah,” Steve looked serious under his forced laugh. “What did she tell you about that?”
“Not much,” Audrey shrugged. “Why? Is she dangerous?”
“Uh, no, probably not… or maybe. I’m on it.”
They told Steve what little they knew and went on to Audrey’s table. Esther made a coffee run while Audrey set up her craft items, and Geekify Greenville began smoothly.
As the morning went on, they both forgot about Ashlee and her wild claims. For a small con, Geekify Greenville drew a steady crowd. Audrey made twice as many sales as she’d hoped, and Esther had fun volunteering. They went to dinner with some of the other artists and vendors, then settled in for the night.
While they slept, Audrey and Esther had no idea that a top-secret meeting was taking place on the roof of the hotel. A meeting that Ashlee was not there to stop.
Audrey and Esther finished their weekend at Geekify Greenville, packed up, and went home. They never saw Ashlee again and never gave her more than a passing thought.
Barely a month later, a fleet of silver spacecraft descended on Earth. Panic spread around the world, but there was little to be done.
Select global leaders had welcomed the alien overlords—in exchange for their own positions of continued power—and entire cities fell when they fought against being conquered.
As they set out from the charred shell of Audrey’s Knit Nook, planning to join the growing resistance, Audrey and Esther had no idea that they had missed their chance to save the world.
