What the Heart Wants
By the time Esther checked in at the volunteer desk, she only had 10 minutes to get to her assigned spot.
She made a detour through Artists Alley anyway, dying to know what Nate had said to Audrey when he delivered her coffee. But she stopped short at the sight of Nate standing beside the simple banner for Audrey’s Knit Nook.
He was watching Audrey with adoring eyes as she fussed with the toys and accessories displayed on stands across her table.
Her coffee sat forgotten between them.
Esther froze, afraid to join them, then hurried off to her assigned post. As she waited for the con to open, Esther felt her excitement for the weekend draining away. The bright orange banners mocked her. The ringing bell that signaled the opening gates jarred her.
“Everything okay?”
Esther looked up to see a broad-shouldered man in a sleek black suit standing beside her. He had a chiseled jaw, full lips, and clear green eyes. Warmth pooled in Esther’s stomach and a welcoming smile stretched across her face.
“I’m Harrison,” the man said in a fluid, deep voice, “hotel security.”
“You’re not in a uniform…?” Esther observed, taking the opportunity to let her eyes drift over his lean body.
“Head of security is more of an undercover job,” Harrison told her with a glint in his eye.
“Oh,” Esther breathed, feeling her heart flutter.
“I’ll be here all day,” he continued, holding Esther’s gaze. “Let me know if you need… anything.”
“Okay,” Esther sighed, catching her breath as he slowly walked away.
By the time she went back to Audrey’s table, Esther was floating on air. Harrison had stopped to chat with her three times and had even asked her to dinner.
“Did you stop by Nate’s booth yet?” Audrey asked.
“Who?” Esther responded absently.
“Uh, Captain Steampunk?”
“Oh, him,” Esther laughed. “You know, you probably have more in common with him than I do. You should ask him to dinner tonight.”
“What? You’ve been talking about Nate all week…?”
“That was before I met Harrison,” Esther sighed, “the head of hotel security.”
“Oh,” Audrey smirked, shaking her head.
“What can I say?” Esther laughed. “The heart wants what it wants.”
The End
Well, that was easy. Maybe they’ll go on a double-date and live happily ever after.
