Out of Patience

Esther was on her own. If she wanted something to happen with Nate, she would have to go after him herself. Be bold. Make an impression.

But, first, she had to finish out her volunteer shift.

Though greeting con-goers and answering questions had been fun when the doors first opened, Esther had soon begun to resent being stuck in one place while everyone else was having a good time around her.

She couldn’t see into Artists Alley from her assigned spot on the main floor, and her mind spun up images of other girls flirting with Nate while admiring his art.

Her mood had turned to a full-blown funk when the trio of wizards glided up beside her.

“We seek the Star Stone,” the central wizard told her ominously, tapping his staff on the floor.

“Yeah?” Esther grumbled, crossing her arms tightly. “Well, all have our problems.”

The wizards stared at her impassively, which only irritated Esther more.

“You can’t find your Star Stone?” she scoffed. “Well, I can’t get a date with Captain Steampunk!”

The wizards continued to stare. After a lingering pause, the central wizard asked, “Does Captain Steampunk have the Star Stone?”

“Argh!” Esther stamped her foot and threw her hands in the air. “No, he does not have your stupid Star Stone.

“Look, I know you’re just having fun, but I’m not in the mood right now. Get it? I’m tired of standing here, my shoes are too tight, I babble like an idiot every time I talk to the guy I like, and I’m wearing a neon orange t-shirt that makes me look like a radioactive carrot. So, unless you can do something to change all that, take your search for your stupid Star Stone elsewhere!”

The wizards exchanged a silent look, then closed their eyes and murmured some strange words.

In a flash, Esther disappeared.

A bright orange rabbit crouched in the spot where she had been standing only a moment before.

The change had happened so fast, no one around them saw it. Except for a toddler who could only say “bunny!” And an elderly man who kept his mouth shut, afraid his kids would put him in a home if he made any wild claims.

Unconcerned with Esther’s fate, the wizards turned as one and silently floated down the nearest aisle in search of their precious Star Stone.

From her place on the floor, Esther no longer worried about getting a date with Nate or looking bad in her t-shirt. Of course, she had bigger problems now, considering she had been turned into a bright orange rabbit.

The End

Perhaps Esther should have been nicer to the wizards. Oh, well. Audrey is sure to take good care of her.
