Moving On
“You go ahead,” Captain Steampunk offered smoothly. “I’ll wait for the next one.”
“Oh, uh,” Esther hesitated.
She wanted to stay back, too, but she knew that would be too obvious after what he’d already overheard.
“Thanks,” Audrey smiled, “we’ll see you down there.”
She stepped into the elevator, leaving just enough space for Esther to follow. Instead, Esther hung back, placing one hand on an elevator door to keep it from closing.
“I’d really like to buy some more of your art,” she told him, hoping that would cover her earlier comments.
“Great,” he grinned with just a hint of amusement. “You know where to find me.”
Esther joined Audrey in the elevator, feeling flushed with her crush standing directly in front of them.
As the doors began to close, he called out, “My name’s Nate, by the way.”
“Well, that was mortifying!”
Esther groaned, unaware that her overstuffed bag was crowding two of the cyborgs.
“It wasn’t that bad,” Audrey reassured hollowly, trying to keep her totes from hitting the older couple.
When they reached the lobby, the elevator opened on orange-shirted volunteers and costume-clad con-goers eagerly waiting for Geekify Greenville to open.
The older couple stepped out of the elevator, pausing to examine one of the con posters that advertised the celebrity guests and scheduled panels.
Audrey watched in amusement, but Esther’s thoughts were stuck on Nate. She replayed their meeting in her mind, wondering if she should laugh it off and start over or give up on her dreams of romance.
“We should get this stuff to my table,” Audrey told her, hitching a tote more firmly over her shoulder.
“Yeah…” Esther half-agreed, though the hotel’s café had caught her attention. “Or I could get us some coffee and meet you over there?”
