Coffee Delivery

A large banner spelled the words Captain Steampunk in gothic gold print on a distressed black background. It stretched between supports above Nate’s table, creating a corner with a matching banner on an adjacent side. He was set up on one end of row 2, in a prime location near the main entrance to Artists Alley.

Audrey’s simple table was tucked in a back corner, too far away to see Esther standing in front of Nate’s booth with a coffee cup in each hand.

“Hi, again!” Nate called over when he spotted Esther.

She moved in closer, letting her eyes drift over the prints of his work displayed behind him. Portfolios on the tables were spread open with signs encouraging people to look through more of his designs.

“Nice set-up,” Esther smiled, bringing her eyes back to his face.

“Thanks. How’s the coffee?”

“Okay,” she answered casually, then stopped mid-sip. “Do you want one?”

“You brought me coffee?” Nate tilted his head with a puzzled grin.

“Oh, well, this is for Audrey…” Esther looked down at the second cup. “But I could get her another one… If you want this one?”

“No, that’s okay,” Nate laughed. “Let’s let Audrey have her coffee. Actually, I can walk over with you. She seemed like she could use some support on her first day.”

“Oh, ah,” Esther stumbled, feeling a growing warmth in her cheeks. “That’s probably not a great idea. I mean, it’s a different kind of con, but she’s sold at things like this before and she just needs some alone time to, um, get ready… You know what it’s like.”

“Uh, yeah,” Nate agreed uncertainly, “I guess so.”

Esther tried to sip her coffee again, but it was too hot. She wanted to take the lid off for it to cool, but her hands were full. She shifted her left arm forward, nearly setting Audrey’s coffee next to one of Nate’s portfolios but thought better of that idea. Not wanting to spill coffee on his art, she held both cups carefully.

“Where are you volunteering this morning?”

“What?”

Esther glanced down at her bright orange shirt, suddenly remembering that she was late to check in at the volunteer desk.

“Oh, right! Uh, I’ll be in the main hall, giving directions and stuff. Actually, I do need to go check in…”

“Okay,” Nate nodded toward the second cup of coffee. “Do you want me to bring that to Audrey for you?”
