Dinner Plans
“I’ll ask him later.”
Marty flipped through a bin of boarded and bagged comics, looking for a variant cover he’d filed earlier. Esther stood beside him, pleading with every fiber of her being.
“You were just at his table,” she pointed out. “When are you going to see him again?”
“Are you spying on me now?” Marty paused his search to toss her a wry smile and shake his head.
Esther crossed her arms, pouting.
“I know you’re just as eager for this dinner.”
Marty froze. His fingers hesitated over the bin and the smile left his face. Even if a part of him wanted Esther to know how he felt about Audrey—and hoped she might help Audrey see him as boyfriend material—Marty wasn’t about to openly admit his feelings.
“Audrey and I are just friends,” he told her in a carefully controlled voice.
“Yeah, but…” Esther stopped, realizing that pushing Marty to admit his feelings might not be the best way to get him to set up dinner plans with Nate.
“Look, I said I’d talk to Nate about the four of grabbing dinner, but I’ll go back on that unless you stop—”
“Done!” Esther chimed in before Marty could finish the request. “You and Audrey are just friends, and I am not pushing anything.”
With another shake of his head, Marty went back to his search. He was about to say something else when a voice behind Esther made her jump.
“Why aren’t you at your post?”
Steve frowned at her over his clipboard. His walkie-talkie crackled as muted voices discussed where they could find more chairs for one of the panel rooms.
“Bathroom break,” Esther smiled, easing away from Marty’s booth. “On my way back now.”
“You’d better be,” Steve warned.
“Mallory is covering my break,” Esther explained, so intent on charming the volunteer coordinator she didn’t even notice when the trio of wizards drifted down the aisle directly behind him. If she had noticed them, Esther might have been unsettled by their gliding gait and their cold, unflinching stares.
“Well, that’s okay then,” Steve admitted grudgingly, crumbling under Esther’s smile.
Though, as he walked away, they clearly heard him mumble, “It’s like herding cats around here.”
Esther turned back to Marty eagerly.
“So, you’ll ask him?”
