Desperation
“Nate, wait!”
Dropping her tote bag, Esther raced after her crush.
Nate turned around in confusion.
“I like you!” Esther burst out loudly. “I’ve liked you ever since last year. And I really hope you might like me, too. And I know we don’t know each other well, but we could have dinner tonight after the con ends. And then stay in touch. And, you know, date. Long-distance relationships aren’t so bad, and Ashton’s not far from here. And you only live… Uh, where do you live?”
Nate stared at Esther. His face paled, and he swallowed hard. People around them openly gawked.
“Uh, we just met,” Nate responded gently, lowering his voice as if soothing a wild animal. “You seem… great… but, uh, well…”
Audrey made her way over to them, lugging all three tote bags behind her. Tears welled in Esther’s eyes as Nate glanced at Audrey helplessly.
“You like her, don’t you?” Esther accused.
“I, uh, don’t really know either one of you…” Nate stammered, his face twisted in distress. “Look, I should get back to my table.”
“Yeah, yeah, go!”
Esther waved him off, dropping to the ground next to Audrey’s overstuffed bags. Her legs had simply given out on her, too mortified to hold her upright.
As Nate walked away, the crowd quickly turned back to their own conversations. Audrey sank to the floor beside her friend and sighed heavily.
“Too soon?” Esther asked after a moment of silence.
“Yeah,” Audrey nodded. “Just a bit.”

That was embarrassing. Maybe you should go a little slower next time. Oh, well. Lesson learned.
