This year, we decided to enjoy a little Christmas in New York City. Our mid-December trip really helped me get into the holiday spirit. And that was a big ask after a rough couple of months and mounting fears for the future.
Our trip included exploring the holiday shops at Bryant Park and Macy’s Harold Square (new in 2024!). As well as visiting specialty midtown shops like The Drama Book Shop and Tannen’s Magic. On a rainy day, we also nabbed tickets to the Rockette’s Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall–which really was spectacular!
Of course, Christmas in New York wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center.

Christmas Glimmers
Before visiting the iconic tree, I considered booking an official photo from the rink steps. But I didn’t want to lock in a time slot or wade through crowds to make it to a specific location. Instead, we wandered over when we were ready and approached the tree where the crowds were thin.
As we got close, I watched visitors taking pictures for the strangers beside them and then stepping aside to make room for others. When we reached the rail, the family next to us offered to take our picture and we returned the favor. We then wandered around for a while and offered to take a few more group pictures for strangers, sharing those glimmers of joy.

While the Rockette’s Christmas show had been truly spectacular, and the holiday shops were merry and bright, those quick moments of strangers taking pictures for each other by the tree was what really brought out my holiday spirit. Even in the midst of the hectic holidays, it’s those small moments of kindness that can be the most inspiring.
Moving into the New Year
During this trip, we gave ourselves permission to be spontaneous. We waited until we got to the city to decide what we wanted to do each day. We didn’t get hung up on having a “perfect” professional photo. There were some unexpected joys, like watching magic tricks at Tannen’s or finding a cozy jazz bar for casual drinks.
This year may have ended with concerns for the future, but taking some time away really helped me put a few things into perspective. Whatever happens in the coming year, there are some important things we can do: 1. make time to do the things we enjoy, 2. allow space for good moments to unfold without expectations, 3. trust that challenges can be navigated together, and 4. continue to offer small acts of kindness whenever we can.
I hope you also find joy this holiday season and into the new year!
